Dentures are a proven, effective option for anyone who's lost teeth to decay, injury, or disease—restoring both the appearance and function of your smile. At Philip K. Clark, DMD, we design dentures to look natural and fit comfortably for patients throughout Fleming Island and Clay County.
A denture is a removable appliance that replaces missing teeth and the surrounding tissue, designed to closely resemble your natural teeth—and, for many patients, to enhance their smile beyond how it looked before.
There are two types:
Complete dentures—used when all teeth in an arch are missing.
Partial dentures—used when some natural teeth remain. A partial denture fills the gaps left by missing teeth while also preventing your remaining teeth from shifting out of position.
If you need a complete denture, there are two ways to approach timing:
Conventional dentures are made after your teeth are removed and your gum tissue has fully healed—typically 4 to 6 weeks. During that healing period, you'll be without teeth.
Immediate dentures are custom-made in advance and placed immediately after your teeth are removed, so you're never without teeth while they heal. Once your tissue has healed and settled, adjustments are made to perfect the fit.
The process typically takes several appointments over a few weeks:
We take highly accurate impressions and measurements to design your custom denture.
Several "try-in" appointments help us fine-tune shape, color, and fit before finalizing.
At your final appointment, your completed denture is precisely adjusted and placed for a natural, comfortable fit.
It's normal to notice increased salivation, some soreness, or minor adjustments to speech and chewing at first—this settles as your muscles and tissues adapt to your new dentures.
On average, dentures last 5 to 10 years, though some patients get 15 to 20 years or more with excellent care. Individual factors make a real difference—patients who grind their teeth, wear their dentures for extended periods, or experience significant jawbone changes may need replacement sooner.
What affects how long your dentures last:
Material quality—Acrylic dentures are the most common and affordable option, but they wear down faster and need more frequent replacement. Porcelain dentures cost more, resist staining and wear better, but can be more prone to breakage if dropped.
How consistently you wear them—daily use wears dentures down faster than occasional use.
Changes in your jawbone—your jaw's shape naturally shifts over time, which can affect how well your dentures continue to fit.
Accidents and damage—dropping dentures, biting hard objects, or exposing them to heat (hot water or surfaces) can warp or damage them.
If any of these sound familiar, it's worth scheduling a visit—waiting can make the underlying issue harder to correct.
Good daily care is the single biggest factor within your control for getting the most years out of your dentures.
Personalized fit process: Multiple try-in appointments ensure your dentures fit comfortably and look natural before we finalize anything.
Deep roots in Fleming Island: Years of experience serving Fleming Island, Orange Park, Green Cove Springs, and the surrounding Clay County community.
Ongoing care, not just a one-time fitting: We check your dentures at regular visits and help you address wear or fit changes before they become bigger problems.
Porcelain typically resists wear and staining better, while acrylic is more affordable and easier to adjust or repair. We'll help you weigh the tradeoffs based on your needs.
The process itself isn't painful, though it's normal to experience some soreness and an adjustment period as your mouth gets used to wearing them.
We generally recommend removing dentures at night to give your gum tissue a rest—ask us for guidance specific to your situation at your next visit.
Because your jawbone changes shape over time, most patients need periodic adjustments—we'll check fit at every visit and let you know if a reline or replacement is needed.
A complete denture replaces all teeth in an arch; a partial denture replaces some teeth while keeping your remaining natural teeth in place and preventing them from shifting.
